It is true that you can put anything on the Internet. It is also true that many things won't make you any money on the Internet.
At this point, you may have 100's of ideas of what you want to do online. 100's of Topics, 100's of Products, and 100's of suggestions. The most important thing to do at this point is to collect these thoughts and write them down.
One of the most important things to know when starting any project is can you answer the "What" Question? Do you know What it is that people are searching for? This next section will help you find the answers to this question and see if you can make a business out of it online.
Let's Start With Some Basic Methods of Research:
1. Log on to your Favorite Search Engine: Google or Yahoo! in most cases
2. Perform a search for your desired area of interest. For this example I am going to use Picture Frame.
Here are the Results From Google and Yahoo! for the Term Picture Frame.
Keyword |
Google |
Yahoo! |
Picture Frame |
15,100,000 |
180,000,000 |
The number you see under the search engine is the number of results that were returned for Internet web pages containing the term picture frame on it. You can also search for "Picture Frame" in quotes to get a more realistic result for the phrase "Picture Frame". However, it is not realistic to think that your customers will be searching for picture frame results using quotes.
As you can see, there are many pages on the Internet dedicated to the keyword Picture Frame. But lets dive in a little deeper. Let's search for Digital Picture Frame. This is a specific type of picture frame that shows you digital photos. They are becoming very popular and may be worth exploring some more.
Keyword |
Google |
Yahoo! |
Digital Picture Frames |
9,100,000 |
43,300,000 |
These results are a bit more interesting. By adding the word Digital we were able to cut the Google results down by 40% and the Yahoo Results down by 80%! We are still competing with 9 Million and 43 Million Other Pages.
Lets try to cut it down some more by searching for LCD Digital Picture Frames.

Yahoo! |
LCD Digital Picture Frames |
409,000 |
12,300,000 |
AH-HA! Now we are on to something. Just from using this basic search technique we now know that a more specific keyword has less competition than a broad keyword.
We can also tell that all of the advertiser slots are filled on Yahoo and Google. These are the Pay Per Click Advertisers who are bidding for placement in the search engine. They say "Sponsored Results" on Yahoo and "Sponsored Links" on Google
On Yahoo! there is a light blue section above the first organic listing (or natural listing) where they showcase the top 2 or 3 advertisers on that page. In this case all 3 slots are filled. This means there is heavy advertising competition for this keyword on the Yahoo Marketing Network. This is a good start.........
BUT WE STILL NEED MORE INFORMATION
From our basic search we know that there is good competition and traffic for our desired keyword. We know that there are advertisers paying money to be located on the home page under Sponsored Links. To me, this tells me there is money to be found somewhere in there. What this information doesn't tell me is where to find the money.
As you dive into your market research and keyword research you will come up with all kinds of keywords that are low target, low volume searches and most importantly low competition. But in order to do that, you will have to repeat your searches over and over and over again. This basic method will only give you a rough idea of the competition for that keyword.
What if you could see how many people were actually searching for your desired keyword? Then you would know how much competition there is and how many people are searching for those keywords. Putting those two pieces of information together can give you a dramatic boost over your competition.

Word Tracker is Many Tools all in one. The two that are most vital to your keyword research are Keyword Universe and Keyword Researcher.
Let us Take a Closer Look at what Each One Does For You:
Keyword Universe: Puts you in front of a broad range of keywords. This tool is sort of like brainstorming (except the program does all the hard work)
Keyword Researcher: Helps you to dip in deeper with those broad keywords and find long tail keyword phrases with good search volume and low competition.
There are also Reports and Projects that will prove to be an invaluable source of information for you.
WHAT TO DO NEXT WITH ALL THIS INFORMATION
Now it is time to make some decisions:
We have the Basic Knowledge of:
1. What People Are Searching For
2. The Competition For Your Selected Keywords
3. How Many People are Searching For it.
But what if your research turns up that there is not enough people searching for one or all of your keywords in a particular category? That is GREAT NEWS!
Let me tell you why:
If you did not have that knowledge then you would have wasted time and money building a website, optimizing it, filling it with content, and promoting it. Potentially costing you $1,000's of dollars. But with the Word Tracker Tool you have helped minimize the risk and save you thousands of dollars.
I have a great example of this:
One of my clients I was consulting sold two types of Products. We will call them Product A and Product B. His whole business model was based around Product A. His Passion was for Product A. The Name of His Business was based around Product A.
Guess what happened when we dove into our Keyword Research for his business.........PRODUCT B was 4 Times Larger on the Internet than Product A. In fact, Product A barely even existed except for a few broad keywords. While he may not sell Product B well in his store (and he didn't plan on selling much of it online), we know that the market for Product B is larger online.
He could of easily stuck with his gut on Product A, not done any research and in turn, NOT DONE ANY BUSINESS!
Do not doubt the power you will have over your competition when you know and understand your market and what your customers are searching for..
